#Ovulation Information #TTC

Interesting information from fertilityauthority.com When Do I Ovulate?
If you’re trying to conceive, becoming familiar with your ovulation is a must—it’s the key to achieving a pregnancy. But when exactly are you ovulating?
The exact time you ovulate depends on the length of your menstrual cycle. If you have a 28-day cycle, you’ll usually ovulate around days 13 to 15, with Day 1 as the first day of your period. You ovulate when hormones cause a mature follicle to release an egg from the ovary, so it could be available for fertilization.
Since the timing of your ovulation depends on your menstrual cycle—and can even vary each month—it can be helpful to learn ways to tell if ovulation is imminent. That way, you can plan sex accordingly.
Here are some easy ways to tell if you may be ovulating:
  • Charting your basal body temperature: Your body temperature raises very slightly—usually 0.4 to 0.8 degrees Fahrenheit—with ovulation, so charting your temperature over the course of several months with a special thermometer can help you figure out the timing.
  • Checking out your cervical mucus: Your cervical mucus can change in consistency throughout your menstrual cycle, ranging from dry or sticky before ovulation to slightly creamier as ovulation draws near. Then right before it occurs, it may take on a slippery, raw-egg-white consistency.
  • Using an ovulation prediction kit (OPK): These at-home tests check your luteinizing hormone, which rises sharply about 12 to 48 hours before ovulation.

Folic Acid and TTC

Folic Acid is recommended for every woman in her childbearing years before she starts trying to conceive. Many doctors will recommend that a woman take a prenatal vitamin enriched with Folic Acid at least three months prior to conception. This will help protect the growing baby against such medical issues as neural tube defects before a woman even knows she’s pregnant.

For many women, eating fortified foods enriched with Folic Acid just isn't enough. To reach your recommended levels, you will also likely require a vitamin supplement. So when you’re thinking about your "baby making kit," don’t forget to pack your Folic Acid pills.

If you have MTHFR, like I do (C677 double mutation), I have to take a special vitamin to get my folic! Feel free to message me and I can let you know what I recommend! :)

Not All Pregnancy Tests are Equal

I came across this interesting article from FertilityAuthority.com! Interesting stuff!

When you're trying to conceive (TTC), you may feel compelled to take Home Pregnancy Tests (HPTs) from the day after ovulation through the two week wait, despite being very well aware that it is too soon to get an accurate result.

Some of us on the TTC journey become connoisseurs of pregnancy tests. We may be loyal to our favorite "go-to" brands or we may grab whatever is on sale. Does it make a difference? Definitely!

Here are four facts about over-the-counter HPTs:

More expensive doesn't necessarily mean more accurate. Pregnancy tests measure the presence of hCG – what some docs call the pregnancy hormone. Some tests detect smaller amounts than others and so are more accurate earlier. You can call the toll free number on the side of the box to see what level your test measures.

You can get a positive on one test and a negative on another. Since some tests are more sensitive than others, you can test positively on a highly sensitive test and then test negative on a less sensitive one.
A positive test doesn't necessarily mean you're pregnant. It's true that false positives are very rare and that the presence of hCG generally points to a pregnancy. But a woman may also have hCG in her blood after a miscarriage or after an hCG trigger shot. In very rare cases, hCG indicates a tumor on the pituitary gland. In short, if you get a positive test, contact your doctor.

A negative test doesn't necessarily mean you're not pregnant. It may be that the test you're using isn't sensitive enough to pick up the hCG in your blood. Since hCG doubles each day in a healthy pregnancy, wait a couple of days and try again or get a more sensitive test.

Still in doubt? Ask your fertility doctor for a blood test. While a urine test can detect the presence of hCG, a blood test can measure the exact amount for a definitive answer. Most fertility doctors encourage patients to refrain from using home pregnancy tests because tests can vary and a blood test is the most accurate way of determining if you have ovulated and conceived or your fertility treatment cycle was a success!

National Folic Acid Awareness Week

January 6-12, 2013 is National Folic Acid Awareness Week and January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month.
What's the link between the two, you might ask?
Getting the recommended amount of Folic Acid while pregnant is important to protect your baby against neural tube defects and promote healthy cell and tissue development. To boost your chances of having a healthy baby, here’s what you need to know about folic acid:
  • Folic acid should be integrated into your TTC plan right from the start as some of the most crucial fetal development occurs very early in the pregnancy. Current research recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.
  • Folic acid can be found in leafy green vegetables like spinach, in orange juice, and is also available as a supplement. Because your diet does not typically deliver the appropriate amount of folic acid, you should consult your fertility doctor about taking prescription or over the counter folic acid supplements.
  • Folic acid, in appropriate doses, can reduce risks of spinal cord damage (spina bifida) or brain development complication by up to 70%.
By improving your health via diet, exercise, and taking vitamin supplements, you'll decrease your chance of miscarriage as well. So follow mom's advice and eat your greens!

Fertility and Avocado

When we were having fertility issues, I went to an acupuncturist. She told me to eat lots of avocado.... at first I wondered why, but I didn't mind at all, I LOVE avocado! I just saw this link from the Fertility Authority, interesting! I remember her telling me that they had all the good fats, and I loved having "permission" to eat such a decadent food. Now this was something I didn't mind doing.

Ode to the Avocado

A recent study has found that good fats — the monounsaturated kind such as those found in avocados — are good for fertility treatment, actually increasing the live birth rate for those undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is great news for those of us who love the green fruit! (And yes, it's a fruit, not a vegetable — in Brazil, they add avocados to ice cream!)

The avocado is packed full of nutrients, including vitamin K, folate, potassium, vitamin E, lutein, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin B6. And each serving of avocado has 3 grams of monunsaturated fat, which helps to lower blood cholesterol if used in place of saturated fats.

Here's a healthy guacamole recipe from the California Avocado Commission:

4 ripe, Fresh California Avocados, seeded and peeled
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tomato, finely chopped
¼ cup finely chopped onion
⅛ tsp. ground cumin
3 drops hot pepper sauce

Coarsely mash avocado with lemon juice and garlic. Mix in other ingredients. Enjoy! (With baked tortilla chips, of course!)

Caffeine and TTC

When I was TTC I was extra careful and cut out all artificial sweeteners, and caffeine. I was not a happy camper!! The doctor said that 200mgs of caffeine a day were ok. But I still avoided it. Occasionally when I had a bad migraine, I would take a Tylenol and have a little coke.

My TCM said that you would be better of drinking a regular coke then diet coke. She said something with the aspartime was awful for TTC. Or even have a little coffee with whole milk and real sugar. So I listened! It was SO hard...as I was addicted to Diet Coke, I would go to the McDonalds drive thru just to get a large fountain Diet Coke!

I just saw this article and thought it was interesting. The first slide that comes up is "Limit Caffeine Consumption".

9 Natural Fertility Boosters

Limit caffeine consumption
Several studies have shown reduced fertility for women who consume more than 300 mg of caffeine each day. Fortunately, the threshold is high enough that you can still indulge in that morning cup o' joe, since the average 8-ounce cup of coffee only has 100 to 130 mg of caffeine. Don't forget, though, that black tea, green tea, chocolate, and some sodas also contain caffeine.
For women undergoing in vitro fertilization, however, the threshold is much lower: A mere 50 mg of caffeine—the equivalent of one cup of tea—can negatively impact success rates.
Alice Domar, an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School who also counsels women dealing with infertility, suggests that you may want to further restrict your caffeine intake if you've been trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant, even if you're not doing IVF. Since only limited research has been done on the topic, Domar worries that further research may show that lower amounts of caffeine still impact fertility.
